aka the 9 year song. The first few chords came to me in 2008, and I couldn't resolve the melody until June 2017, when all of a sudden, the song practically finished itself. The lyrics were written in 72 hours on hotel stationery. My most complex composition thus far, though I'm still working on getting some of the pieces to fit together more harmoniously. This needs a proper studio recording (bathrooms aren't great for high parts), but hopefully you can appreciate the vision, if not the execution :)
lyrics
Father never thought I would amount to very much
Mama she abandoned me and wished me luck
Life is lonely when you don’t connect
I know that I’ve been easy to forget
You don’t deserve all the blame
We play a zero sum game
I’m a simple kind of man, with simple needs
All I ever wanted was a share of your dream
I’ve been a loyal slave for 25 years
How much longer (be)fore you set me free
I've got my back to the wall
I've placed my bets and I've lost
(In) divided minds and damaged lives
Master deals, while he does what he feels
Darkness rules everywhere I turn
You set the world on fire, I watch it burn
Children die in infernos of neglect
As the oceans rise and glaciers melt, she says
Leave me behind, darling I’ll only slow you down
At least one of us will make it out of this town
